Default Couldn't make DV Stream from AVC encoded film...

Yesterday, I had enormous trouble with a video file which would play fine in QT Player, but which I could not import into Pro Tools. When I attempted to convert to a DV Stream, the resulting files video was merely a white blank screen. When I tried simply dragging it into PT so I could at least view it matched with the timeline on the computer screen, it did go in and I could even see frames from it in the region on the timeline, but it would not play in Pro Tools' video window.

I also tried Mpeg Streamclip but with no success. In the file info, it says it was AVC Coded....curious if anyone knows if I am missing a certain codec (or concept) which would help me deal with this if it happens again. I eventually got an mpg which I could convert but was not happy with the session delay I have received video from the same production company in the past with no problem. Thanks in advance for any help!

You have 2 options.

1. Ask the editor to send you a DV file.
2. convert the file they sent you with a non free application like Visual Hub.

Good luck

also, check to make sure you have all the right codex loaded for your quicktime app... you can also use other formats for protools besides DV. We even use APPLE pro res 422 in PT10 with no problems. ( free download for QT if you don't have FCP )

cheers

we had a similar issue a while ago. mpegstreamclip couldn't convert an avc encoded mp4 without crashing. tried installing the apple pro codecs (from fcp studio) but it made no difference.

i finally got it to work by transcoding it to pro res in fcpx.
