Default Re: Is Pro Tools Right For Me?

Forget the USB Blue mic for recording music. It really was designed as an early "podcasting" mic.

Do you have Pro Tools software already?

You will be better served by an audio interface that connects over USB but has built in preamps.

It all depends on budget. It is really hard to give you real world answers without a budget.

Are you a piano / keys player ? (I'm assuming so) if so you will want a MIDI keyboard. The answer to which one lies in what price you want to pay and also how many octaves of keys you require.

Personally I'm of the opinion that Pro Tools is actually far better for many beginners than GarageBand because it has a traditional multitrack recorder / mixer environment that is the simplest in its GUI implementation.

Money is the deciding factor in what options any of us are going to give you.

Default Re: Is Pro Tools Right For Me?

I think it is worth mentioning that some of the interfaces that were mentioned come with a free copy of Pro Tools First (like the Scarlet) .. and I believe PTF is more than enough for amateurs.

I agree with the above about ProTools vs Garageband. I moved away from GB almost immediately as there were some big limitations, even for amateurs like myself. The first that comes to mind was that there were no real clipping indicators.

Default Is Pro Tools Right For Me?

Pro Tools First is such badly crippled software it does not deserve serious mention, certainly not without mentioning all those restrictions. Starting with your sessions are stuck in the cloud and not compatible with anything else, including other versions of Pro Tools. And the incompatibility with most third party plugins make it a non-starter for say people interested in working with a rich set of VIs. There are many other DAWs out there to choose from that do not have the severe limits of Pro Tools First.
