Default Mbox Pro 1st Generation Useless?

I purchased a protools 9+mbox package 3 years ago, only to realise that it was a firewire interface, which I did not have a connection for. After some time, I acquired a PCIe firewire card.

Recently, after attempting to set it up as a default audio output, I searched online and discovered that the drivers aren't updated anymore.

Does this mean I have a a piece of hardware worth approximately $400 that's useless?

If I can run a second gen mBox on Windows 7 then you can run a mBox Pro on Windows 7 as well.
You are probably looking at the wrong drivers or setting it up wrong.

You have to go into the Windows sound setup and setup the device it's not as simple as just selecting it.
You go in and select the interface then set up what it's allowed to do.

The third gen mBox is much simpler to use and setup.

Indeed, the Mbox 2 Pro(with firewire) is actually of the 2nd generation of Mboxes, and is still supported thru PT11. As for using it as the default audio output, that's kind of a crapshoot, but there are other options that could make your life much simpler. For me(using 002/003), I never tried to use the interface as the sound card for everything. Those boxes actually have an AUX input, but the Mboxes lack this feature. Simple solution; buy the cheapest Behringer mixer(502) for around $40. Feed the Mbox outputs to a stereo channel, feed the computer sound card output to the other stereo channel. Feed the mixer outputs to your monitors and crank up the volume knobs (with no tone knob adjustments on the mixer, the audio path is plenty clean and neutral).

On the box that I purchased the package in, there was no mention of it being second generation, so I assumed it was a 1st generation. It is an mbox pro.

The firewire card is plug and play, it's the pro tools approved SIIG 1394 3-port PCI i/e Part Number: NN-440012 Model Number: NN2608 Bus type: 32-bit PCI.

I was referring to the mbox drivers.

Currently what I'm trying to do is make it the default audio device as opposed to the internal soundcard.

I have a mixer, but I'd like to take advantage of the mbox dac as opposed to the soundcard, as it crackles and is low quality.

A few things to consider here(granted #1&2 are not related to your question, but you need to be aware of them anyway):
#1-you have onboard graphics and this has been(in the past) an issue with Pro Tools(maybe these newer systems are okay)
#2-you have a single hard drive and Pro Tools NEEDS a separate 7200 rpm(or SSD) drive for sessions(and avoid all "green" drives)
#3-this mobo has an optical SPDIF output for audio, so a modest SPDIF to analog converter box could get you clean audio from other programs(I use that port on my system to feed a Presonus Central Station. When I want to hear Windows or other program audio, I hit a button)
#4-it may be a simple setting in audio properties, but some versions of Avid/Digi drivers are multi-client, and some are not. For this to actually work the way you want, you will need a multi-client driver(and I just don't know about the Mbox drivers)

The dark blue mini, mBox and mBox Pro are the 2nd gen.
First gen was the original light blue no MIDI unit that Focusrite helped them make.
The third gen are the AVID units.

To use the second gen on Windows you have to do additional setup within the Windows.
Go to the Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Manage Audio Devices

There you have to configure what is fed to and from the mBox 2, once done it will function properly.
