Default PT 10 HD3 TDM voice count?

I recently upgraded our studio system from PT 9 HD|3 (TDM system) to PT 10 HD software. Having 128 voices at 48k on PT 9 was severely crippling our ability to mix.

I was under the impression that with our system, the upgrade to PT 10 would give us another 64 voices, upping the total usable voices to 192 at 48k.

This is not the case.

Is there anything that has to be done to enable the extra voices? Because at the moment we've just paid a small fortune for what is barely an upgrade, if anything it has brought far more problems than fixes.

Is there a particular setting or thing that has to be done to have the extra voices or is it automatic?

Any help would be much appreciated.

it's not the software that gives more voices
it's the cards them selves, Acell over original

The system is 1 Core and 2 Accel cards. Is the Core card itself holding back the voice count?

Please check this document, it is the Getting Started Guide for Pro Tools 7. On page 2 it states the Audio Recording and Playback Capabilities of Pro Tools HD systems

Pro Tools HD 1 (for PCI and PCIe)

Pro Tools HD 1 systems provide recording and playback of 24-bit or 16-bit audio files with the following track counts:

- up to 96 tracks at 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz
- up to 48 tracks at 88.2 kHz or 96 kHz
- up to 12 tracks at 176.4 kHz or 192 kHz

Pro Tools HD 2 Accel and HD 3 Accel (for PCI and PCIe)

Pro Tools HD 2 Accel and HD 3 Accel systems provide recording and playback of 24-bit or 16-bit audio files with the following track counts:

- up to 192 tracks at 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz
- up to 96 tracks at 88.2 kHz or 96 kHz
- up to 36 tracks at 176.4 kHz or 192 kHz

So you were always capable of the track counts shown above, with PT HD 7, PT HD 8, PT HD 9 and PT HD 10. So there was no need to upgrade for higher track counts, they were there all the time.

You can choose the track count in Setup > Playback Engine, you need to choose a' Number Of Voices'. It is explained on page 48 and 49 of the Getting Started Guide for Pro Tools 7 (see link above). The maximum is '192 Voices (6 DSP's)' at 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz

I hope this has helped you,

Yes. HD2 Accel enables 192 voices, but you need to set it up in Playback Engine setup page. If it only shows 128 max, then you have original Process cards instead of Accel.

^ What Janne said. If your farm cards do not have a sticker on the PCI bracket that says "HD|Accel", then they are the earlier "HD process" cards. You only need one Accel card in the system to increase the voice count, and you can have a combination of Accel and process cards.
