Default session suddenly running extremely slow

working on a session that completely freaked out. the song started playing and would not respond to any commands. now it seems to be running very slowly (key commands do not respond in a timely manner).
this particular tune is the only one of five that seems to be affected. there are even far less plug ins on this one than the others. any ideas?
