Default SSC Bit Depths

Thinking of getting a copy of SSC. If my Protools session is 24bit 44.1khz based does it matter about the bit depth used for SSC samples, i.e can I use 16bit samples in SSC while the Protools session files are 24bit. Also will SSC support mixed bit depths, unlike Protools?
Other question, know it will work with my TDM system, will it work with Protools Free on my powerbook?
