Default Looking to get an M-Box2, questions (academic version, snow leopard, etc.)

Hey everyone!

I'm an audio student, and I'm looking to get an mbox 2 to do some basic recording in my room and to be able to mix sessions from the schools studio. I do have a couple of questions.

1. What's the difference between the academic and the standard versions? Will the Pro Tools that comes with it be eligible for an upgrade?

2. Will Pro Tools and my mbox 2 work on Snow Leopard 10.6.3?

3. Any other issues that I will run into with my computer? (Intel core 2 duo 2.8 ghz, 4 GB DDR3 ram)

4. Is it worth it to get the mbox 2 pro? I'm only just starting out with audio, and this is my first equipment I'm investing in.

Thanks a lot for all the help!

1) no difference in the software, the difference is who they will sell it to and it might get killed off but usually a path to a regular version is offered

2) yes (well 10.6.2 but....)

3) shouldn't be but you never know for sure

4) hard to say w/o knowing your future plans but probably is worth getting

Cost. That is it. It is just as expandable/update-able.

However paying updates will be that.... Payable. Just like the regular version.

And go for the mBox2 Pro. To many potential negative issues with the the USB version.

Not that I don't trust you, but where can I confirm that I will be able to upgrade the academic version?

And I'm a little hesitant about spending a lot of money on an 002/003/mBox2 pro, as I'm only just starting out and will only be doing simple recordings in my dorm room.

Thanks!

Ask the technician at your uni/college to contact avid or their supplier or contact avid customer support yourself, as this is more of a consumer issue rather than a technical one.

Maybe avid would chip in to give some clarity to ERM0613?

is it really worth the extra $200 for the mbox2 pro for someone who probably wouldn't record more than 2 tracks at a time, and if I wanted to, I could always get a mixer and just output it into the two inputs into my mac.

Thanks!

Eric

Not into protools you won't. It only uses protools/m-audio interfaces. Maybe look at the m-Audio options available. There may be one that more suites your needs.

Sorry, let me clarify.

I would take the two quarter inch outputs from my my mixer and use input 1 and 2 in the mbox2 and just run that into my mac.

Yes.

But not without the mbox2 or PT/m-audio interface.

The 'mbox2 mini' would do for just 2 jack inputs if thats all you require on a tight budget.
