Default Win 98 SUCKS

Well, I just bought a new hard drive and CD-RW, for performance with Pro-tools and of course burning my own tunes. Installed them tonight in my machine, that went fine. Then wasn't sure what the process was to get the hard drive recognised in Windoze, and formatting etc.

So's I think "hmmmm add new hardware in control panel, maybe that'll work..."

Well, never have I experienced shock, fear, anger, and frustration like I did tonight!

Windoze decided to remove all of my hardware configuration information...video, audio, system stuff, pretty much all the hardware configuration stuff that exists when you go to Control Panel->System->Device Manager....Gone, all gone! So then Windoze starts to 'find' it all again, of course only finding a small fraction of everything!

So now I have to pray that I can reinstall everything (it's not exactly reinstalling easily, and I don't even know everthing I'm missing!).

Btw anyone have any problems like this with Windoze 98 before? I really like how Windoze finds hardware for me. It's sooooo nice and thoughtful and helpful. WiNdoZe RuLz

How's Mac X?

Hey man, i have never heard of anything like that ever happening...ever. I have worked with windows platforms for at least 9 years. As a matter of fact when win 95 and plugin play came out, that made life on us power users sooo much easier. i worked at a univeristys computer lab while still in highschool and when i changed out a lot of the computers hardware, i would simply go to the device manager, and remove like almost everything, and let windows reinstall it all again. It saved soo many headaches. No more fooling around with assigning irq's and the whatnot.

As far as installing a new hard drive, unless you have done it before, it can be confusing and a pain in the butt. I would have a friend come over that has done it before show you.

A new hard drive out of the box, has never been formatted. So basically you have to do an initial format before any computer can even recognize it (even plug in play). You have to run a program called Fdisk. I would guide you through it, except i dont have it open right now, and i dont want to mess up what you want to do with your hard drive. Basically this is where you partition and format your hard drive for the first time use. Just like when you had to format diskettes before using them, but you have to use Fdisk.

Good luck.

Christian

Well, still having problems, as expected. I'm just going to reformat my C: drive and reinstall windoze and then everything else I need to.

Kinda crummy. Just felt like venting on how crappy win 98 is. I hope win 2k professional is acting more stable for people.

Hopefully I'll be up and running again with pro tools!

Win 98 SUX
