The most interesting thing to me is they went with old school MADI while Avid went with AVB. I kind of hope AVB really takes off.

Yes touchscreens are going to be appearing everywhere.

I understand it's trivial to convert from MADI to AVB.

I would hope so. SSL have their own MADI to Dante bridge, I have never seen a price on that. I've not noticed any AVB to MADI bridges yet, they have to come or are already here, maybe I'm just missing the obvious. I had the impression that MADI licensing costs can be high, but it should be irrelevant on a system with this price/target audience. For many live situations I would imagine if your console interlink technology is MADI or AVB you are just going to stick with what it comes with and now want any extra complexity of bridges in the middle of things.

Being able to use standard low cost and very flexible Ethernet infrastructure in many situations live or not will be pretty appealing. And if more commodity/off the shelf computers support AVB direct interfaces that is neat as well even for pretty low end applications.

I understand Dante is a brand of AVB. Original (real?) SSL was one of the big promoters of MADI digital consoles along with original Neve.

Dante is not a "brand of AVB". Dante talks about how their systems can interoperable in future. Both technologies are both based on Ethernet and a bit more. Dante is very nice technology, but I'd hope for Audinate's sake that they start showing some real-world AVB interoperability more than the current marketing talk. Proprietary just ain't going to win fighting a more open AVB standard. I'd imagine Dante's licensees are beating on them for this, either that or they'll end up doing do their own AVB spin and just drop Dante.

The final AVB standard has only been around for a few months. I agree that proprietary is a loser but AVB support has been buried in all of the fine print I've seen. NAMM and NAB will both probably offer up a bunch in this area.

Yes, and if Audinate leverage their strength in this area they should be able to rush to be a leader here with AVB technology and customer adoption. I hope they tend to aggressively do that, embrace it, not try to stave it off as a threat.
