Global consipracy towards eradication of compact disc\'s
recently my sony console cd player started to go bad. after 12 long hard years of abuse the $140 unit died. after the funeral, i went shopping for a replacement. upon investigation, i found that a replacement player was in the $200 range. then i noticed a panasonic DVD player was $25 more, and had such features as 24bit/96k conversion as well as the ability to play audio and video cd's and of course, DVD's. i decided to kill two birds with one stone and bought it. it does play quite nicely, factory cd's are crisper and deeper than the old sony, and the picture is really something else. BUT, (of course there is a but) it will not play any cd's recorded with masterlist or toast. aparently it is designed not to play any type of cd-r at all, in fact it says this in the instructions. i have heard rumors that "well gee, the laser is different and doesn't work with those homemade jobs". um, right. if it plays a factory cd, it should play a red book cd-r. cd players play them, and dvd players play cd's. i am curios how the player even knows the difference between the two, since cd players don't and my apple can't tell either. is there a code burned into factory cd's that tells the player it is indeed a factory cd? or is there a code built into the cd-r that tells the player not to play it? it would seem that the corporations are pricing these dvd players to compete with cd players, perhaps to eradicate the production of said players, and thus render cd-r playback impossible. with the advent of mp3, and dvd, both formats trying to edge out the cd it is beginning to be a scary world we live in. my degree in production is being obsoleted in the name of corporate strategy, the large scale cospiracy to eradicate the home studio and independant production of small run cd-r's. i can produce 50 cd-r's for a small budjeted artist for a fraction of the cost of the minimum cost of a factory pressing. appaently we are scaring the record companies so much that they are getting rid of us entirely.
apparently these same dvd players also will not play dvd rom, dvd ram, or anything else that is not pressed in a factory in large numbers. it says so right in the instructions. damn. the year 2000 is the first in the decade of technological obsolesence. i am very disapointed that i cannot play cd-r's in these dvd players. buy them fast folks, these cd players will be gone before you know it. |

Re: Global consipracy towards eradication of compact disc\'s
"i have heard rumors that "well gee, the laser is different and doesn't work with those homemade jobs". um, right. if it plays a factory cd, it should play a red book cd-r." CDR's and mass produced CD's use different technology - the way the disc reflects the light isn't exactly the same for both formats. "i am curios how the player even knows the difference between the two, since cd players don't" CDR technology is basically a hack designed after the cd standard was established. Since cd players weren't designed to play writable media, the engineers had to work backward to come up with something cd players could read. I believe there were a couple different competing technologies of CDR initially. The dvd player doesn't "know" the difference, they just couldn't design a laser configuration that would read dvd's, cd's, AND cdr's. At least not for the first batch - newer dvd players should be able to read cdr's, although they may be much more sensitive to different brands of disc. "is there a code built into the cd-r that tells the player not to play it?" Nope, same data, just different chemical makeup/reflectivity of the disc. Mike |

Re: Global consipracy towards eradication of compact disc\'s
We bought a $2000 California Audio DVD player for our home. It won't read CD-Rs either.
I think the problem falls somewhere in between industry conspiracy and technology deficiency, but I don't know where.... |

Re: Global consipracy towards eradication of compact disc\'s
Hi all. My Sony DVD/ CD player (purchased January 1998) plays CDs fine, as well as CDRs made w/ MasterList CD with a 4x Yamaha burner (3 grand in 1995, about $299 now. Oh well). However, I do find that with the el-cheapo discs (the dollar-a-piece kind) more often than not I can't get various players to read them, usually my boom box freaks out for example. The Quantegy or TDK pro discs always work. Just my 2 cents Good luck!

Re: Global consipracy towards eradication of compact disc\'s
Pioneer 414 definitely plays CD-R. The new Pioneer 525 specs claim it plays CD-Rs.
Most Phillips DVDs play CD-Rs. (No coincidence that Phillips makes stand alone CD Burners.) Older Sony's played CD-Rs. You may have luck with CD-RWs on many players. ------------------ Chris Knight nyc [This message has been edited by cknight (edited February 04, 2000).]

The Pioneer 525 DVD player plays CD-Rs every time.
The Toshiba 3109 never plays CD-Rs. Just a couple of data points. |

Re: Global consipracy towards eradication of compact disc\'s
I WOULD THINK IF THAT WAS THE CASE,WITH
ALL THE ISSUES SURROUNDING THE AGP G-4`S DVD-RAM,IT WOULD ALSO HAVE PROBLEMS PLAYING CDRs,BUT THEY DON`T. CDs HAVE A FOIL FILM WHICH COVERS A IMPRESSED PLASTIC DISC WHICH WAS PRESSED BY GLASS MASTER,LEAVING THE PITS IN SPIRALS.CD RECORDERS LASER BURNS THRU THE PROTECTIVE CLEAR PLASTIC WITHOUT DAMAGE,TO THE DYE(FOIL)LEAVING THE SAME IMPRESSIONS AS THE FACTORY CDs.
