An iPad app could handle transport pretty easily.

Yes it could but I'd prefer standard transport buttons and a tactile knob - and definitly not in goofy Euphonix/Artist style layout. I could see that S3 + transport control as a great C|24 replacement. No mediocre preamps or monitor section needed. And for many home/project studios I really think the shallow console is nice, just lets you plonk it on any old desk with a couple of displays behind it.

With Air Display you'll get a touch screen to manipulate EQ's and Compressor curves - very useful. I have even contemplated building a holder for the iPad to incorporate it with the Artist console physically… (Same size and black piano varnish)

Transport controls can easily be HUI if Avid doesn't make one. Analog inputs on pro digital consoles are probably history other than for talkbacks.

I saw a video last night where an Avid rep pointed out that there´s a user definable touchstrip on the right bottom. I´m pretty sure, the S3L will be sold as Eucon controller as it is atm.

Everything new is Eucon and they support all audio and video software provided it includes Eucon support. I know I sound like a salesman but I think this really is a big deal for the future.

I agree "this really is a big deal for the future", but only if Avid gets their pricing in order.

Avid needs to bring in a 24 channel unit at a price at least $5,000 under the price of a comparable D-Command or the small-to-medium-sized studios won't be able to afford it, and a lot can change in the 5-years minimum before the big guys have to jump.

The S6 looks nice based on what we've seen, but price, usability, and build quality will determine how big a "hit" it is...

I do not work for Avid (their loss)...my only relationship with Avid is that of a customer (when I'm not too poor to buy stuff, like now)...and that hot administrative assistant...that's more of a "thing" than a "relationship" (that should keep them guessing for a while...)

Just rockin'...what more is there?

Small to medium studios got on just fine during the 1980s and '90s without SSLs or Neves. I'm sure Avid is looking at the entire market and only taking a chance on developing products they really believe can be competitive. I can't afford S6. That's why I rent studio time when I need something at that level.

Maybe they'll bring out a much improved Artist series or maybe they'll just bring out some Eucon tablet apps to supplement Artist Mix and S3. Like it or not, professional audio has become very polarized economically. It's about both Avid's competition and the math. They unfortunately aren't an arts charity dedicated to building everything some of us want.
