Man - mine is nowhere near that stable. The tuner on my 11R jumps all over the place.

Im with you man. The 11R tuner is accurate. It may not be the best tuner in the world, but its just as good as most, you shouldn't have any trouble tuning with it.

In the old days when tuners where analogue, there was some kind of dampening around the pick attack so the needle didn't jump all over.

Some modern tuners have this, especially when there first products came from the non-digital era(Boss fe).

The 11r tuner is accurate but doesn't have that "dampening". So basically if you whack your strings with a pick attack, the tone always will be higher compared to 1,5-2 seconds after the pick attack.
Softer pick attack has less ''needle jumping''.
Saying the 11r tuner is inaccurate is inaccurate.

What firmware version in the Eleven Rack? Guitar pickups types? Active? What ones are you using (bridge neck?)? Tone and volume wound up on the guitar? All pedals etc. between the guitar and eleven rack turned off? (I made that mistake recently with a Deja Vibe pedal and was wondering what was going on with the Eleven Rack tuner wobbling back and forwards...) if you have external pedals have you tried just plugging the guitar straight into the rack ?

What does "jump all over the place" mean - a decay from sharp to flat as the note decays or a random wavering of the frequency?

Its just hard to see how you would have a faulty tuner feature in the Eleven Rack if other things seem OK, it plays OK etc.

Some additional hints, applicable to *all* accurate tuners:

1. Damp all unplucked strings. This is especially important when (assuming your guitar is in standard tuning) you're tuning the B string, as that'll cause sympathetic vibration of the low E which has harmonics that are close to the the B. You want to see jumpy: just pluck your B string repeatedly while you make small changes to the undamped low E.

2. Make sure your strings are reasonably fresh. Gunk on the strings, or divots in the windings where they contact the frets, will cause uneven vibration and inaccurate tuning.

3. If you have any fret buzz or rattle on the open strings, all bets are off.

4. If your guitar has single-coil pickups, make sure they're not too close to the strings. Google "stratitis" for an explanation.

5. Pluck gently while tuning. As noted by others, a plucked string plays sharp at higher amplitude. That's normal and expected; it has to do with the fact that the metal under tension is not perfectly elastic.

6. Mute while tuning. The sound in the room can get back into the tuner at a high enough level to cause confusion.

Same here. I'd love to free up the space on my board where my Turbo Tuner is, and would if my results looked like that.

Firmware version 2.01 with expansion pack installed. Humbuckers straight into the 11 rack and I'm not wacking the strings. I do find that turning the tone knob to 1 definitely helps, but still "jumping".

Rolling back the tone as you noted may help by focusing on the fundimental and reducing harmonics. I was going to add that to Axe Dyes excellant post but see that youve already noted that.

One additional thing you may try is try tuning from the middle switch position. The bridge can be bright and some times the neck position amplifies the pick attack or strings amplitude. Using both pickups together may cancel out some dominant harmonic string nodes and allow for a less jumpy tuner experience. Something to try.
