Default Windows XP Pro updates!

Hello, i have AVG security on my pc.
Digi recommends disabling the Windows automatic updates.
I have been in touch with AVG and they say this may leave the pc vulnerable to viruses.

Any ideas?

I notice most/90% of the updates are security related.

Was thinking i can leave the updates on and delete them if it interferes with Tools.
What are most guys doing regards htis issue.

thanks.

Just disable the Internet connection, Windows updates and AVG when you're working. Re-enable them when you want to go onto the Internet.

Alternatively use a dual boot.

Your best protection against a virus attack, and against an update scrapping your system is; have a backup plan. Mine is to have a drive image or clone(actually, I use both). Acorns true image is a good choice here. I have saved images of all my system drives(I have several computers) and keep them on a 2tb USB drive. If I get a virus, sometimes the antivirus can't fix it. If that happens, I just do a complete restore from the image. The same trick can save the day if an update( automatic, or manual) goes bad. Restoring from a drive image puts your system drive back to exactly like it was(save the image when everything works great). Beats the heck out of reloading every bit of software you own

The "automatic updates" will run in the background scanning for updates and can lower your performance or otherwise muck with PT.

If you are concerned about your Windows updates just manually run the updates every week or so, no need to have it constantly scanning for them.

The other responders have good advise too (I don't worry too much about it since my PT computer never touches the internet unless it absolutely has to).

Well, my PT machine doesn't connect to the internet either, but it still managed to catch some malware(which could have been my fault with some downloaded update that I neglected to scan first, on the computer it was downloaded to, or from a client bringing in an infected drive). But again, having a drive image done when things are hunky dory, allows you to recover from ANY kind of failure of the system drive, including bad updates, malware, or even a total hard drive failure(which has or will happen to every computer user, eventually). Consider that the last drive failure I had was with a 2 week old drive

Albee has the best advice. The cost of a drive and the software to clone your drive is far less than the cost to recover a bad drive. And the peace of mind is priceless.
