Default Mixdown on Outboard Console - How Do You ROUTE?

I've been mixing to an outboard recorder (Masterlink) but I'd like to mix to PT from the outboard console. I'm sure there is a simple answer - So My PT tracks are routed out to the console. I tried patching the mix outs from the console into a couple of spare channels on the interface. Signal does show up there. But in PT, there is a feedback loop when I hit record on those tracks.

Fail.

How is this normally done?

If you're using the 24 I/O, I would appropriate 23-24 for the mix input and monitoring output. The sum from the console goes to 23-24 input and 23-24 output goes to the 2-track inputs on the console for monitoring. In Pro Tools, make sure the mix track is routed to 23-24.

Just wanted to say - thanks for the idea, using 23-24 as the 2-track.

What I did was get a 2x2 interface to another computer which is my 2 track machine.

So, outputs 1-24 from my interface to tape returns 1-24 of the console. \

Tape 1 out from the console to the mixdown machine.

Since the 2d machine is only recording 2 tracks, it doesn't need near the horsepower of the multitrack (ProToools) machine. In fact it's an AMD Athlon x2 w/4 gig.

Since you're mixing on a console, the likelihood that PT is being taxed is low IMO. I can't see a need for a second DAW unless you're looking to capture your mix at a different sample rate.

I use Soundforge for the mixdown computer.

I'm an old geezer, and I tried eliminating the 2d workstation, but it got to be a pain switching from listening to the multitrack to listening to the 2mix. This way I just select Tape1 as my console source to listen to the 2mix and mix to hear the multitrack. Unless I missed something (I switched from Nuendo), I'd have to mute the multitrack tracks to listen to the 2mix.

I'm not saying that my way is better, just easier for me.

I don't use Nuendo anymore at all. I got pissed off during the initial 4.0 debacle, and stayed with 3.2 till last year. I guess it might have worked, but I never bothered to set the control room up due to all the confusion over routings when it first came out.

Additionally I know of at least one project I lost cause I couldn't check the PT requirement off. They wanted to track at my place and mix somewhere else.
