Default Thunderbolt TDM!

So.. in a Lion Mac's extensions folder is this driver file...

AppleThunderboltUTDM.kext

Coincidental naming I wonder?

UTDM - Universal TDM? - are AVID making TDM accessible to other DAWS? They did promise to be more open. Interesting possibilities, could be nothing.

Having seen the prototype Avid interface with a Thunderbolt (Light Peak) port it will be very interesting to see where they go. I'm sure the future of TDM is not too far around the corner now!

Hope to hell someone builds a Thunderbolt port onto a graphics card or something we can stick into our 'older' mac pros PCIe slots (2009 /10 /11!!)

Jason

It might be that coders like waves are making them available for other platform.

Avid/Digidesign aren't the only people that use time division multiplexing:

but who knows? maybe it is to support ProTools.

as Spaced said TDM is Time Division Multiplexing
other examples of TDM are:
MADI
phone system trunk lines

I'm not surprised that Thunderbolt uses a TDM system to move data

More likely it stands for Target Disk Mode.

The Intel spec states that TB has to be built into the motherboard, so unless some very clever manufacturer can find a way round that, I doubt that 'older' computers will ever have TB.

Sorry, I don't really understand what you're saying.

I have seen nothing that indicates that Thunderbolt can be connected via a PCIe card. I have seen examples where a PCIe card can be connected via Thunderbolt though.

In fact I remember when all this hoopla started that Intel expressively announced that motherboards needed to have a TB connector, and it would not be possible to add TB retrospectively to motherboards.

Sorry it's a driver for Apple Universal Target Disk Mode.
An extension so a TB equipment mac can boot as drive.
