What do you think of these books?
I ordered these from Amazon.
Have any of you heard of any of them? *(I'm a beginning engineer) **Craig Anderton's Home Recording for Musicians **The Home Studio Guide to Microphones **Producing in the Home Studio with Pro Tools (Book & CD-ROM Package) |

Re: What do you think of these books?
They are good.
A few others I recommend: Modern Recording Techniques- David Miles Hubert Yamaha's Live Sound Handbook The Music Business Handbook Confessions of Record Producer Sorry I don't have authors for the latter ones. These books offered me a lot of insight into recording and the music industry.

Re: What do you think of these books?
I just picked up "Confessions of a Record producer" a few days ago and I can't let it down.
Not much to do with miking a drumkit or how to set your pre-delay in a reverb plugin, but when it comes to the ins and outs of how the music industry does work (as opposed to should work), it's the best book I've ever read. pk

Re: What do you think of these books?
One I can't rave about is, "Pro Tools 5.1 For Music Production -recording, editing, and mixing" by Mike Collins...
This tome should've been titled, "I'll Remind You Of Some Advanced Techniques (which I'll mention but not really show you how to set up) In Pro Tools, The Program You've Been Using For Years, While I Rattle On About Some Nearly-Famous Bands I Worked With At One Time!" For me, still getting the hang of the program, almost useless. PLUS, the author is English, so expect terms like "Drop-In' instead of "Punch-In' and it's written for a Mac, so you'll get 'Command-Shift' shortcuts. (speak English! (PC)I kept thinkin'!) On the other hand, I just got ahold of "Producing In The Home Studio With Pro Tools" and, although you will probably find more basic material than you need, (it could be about half as long for what I was seeking) it's very readable and there is a lot of good .PDF documentation on the CD, -some of which I haven't found anywhere else- Bonus! The CD has some Waves and other top quality plug-in demos. |

Re: What do you think of these books?
Hi Gabriel,
well, what can I say, I'm on my second serving. It's that well written, it's that good. I once bought a book entitled 'how to start and run your own record label', which was good, but it was all veggies and no meat. Redundant phrases from the author and quotes from successful label execs throughout, such as, "oh, it's such hard work - make sure you establish many good relationships - good luck in finding a distributor - you need to setup a good business plan - you will spend most of your time talking to important people on the phone - oh, did I mention it's very hard work - and so on.... "Confessions of a Record Producer" has all the music-biz meat you can gnaw on. -You want to know what really goes on when you sign a publishing deal? -Why signing with a major label is like dealing with the devil. -How much can you expect to make of an indie release with major distribution. -How do royalties, label advances and recoupment deals really work? -What to look for in a lawyer, and what they want from you and don't always tell. -The role of the manager and how he can make or break you. -What a producer/mixing engineer makes on a major project that sells 'x' amount. ok, you get the idea. It's all about that and it's f***ing fascinating to read because it's all based on true experiences. Just 12 pages in and you'll know what I mean by "that good". pk
