Re: Any suggestions (drums)?
As I recall you said earlier you didn't use some of the close mics right? If that's right then you can't even begin to get close to what the 'pro' mixer did. And for my clarification as it's still unclear - you didn't use the tracks the other guy used right but your own recording right? What I'm trying to get at is how exactly did you get the tracks you mixed?

Re: Any suggestions (drums)?
Then just learn to mix properly. If there was a same mixer doing the same tricks, there would be the same result, or at least very close.

Re: Any suggestions (drums)?
Without knowing the mics or mic placement or the playing style of the drummer, I'd say take one overhead mic and compress s*it out of it and try to make the close mics blend... and first make it sound good MONO, only then try to make it wide.

Quote:
John the drummer also recorded my music at Studio A recently. Same mic placement, same engineer, same settings as the first one. mp3 2 are those drums tracks in the process of being mixed by me. Quote:
Thank you. This is the kind of info I'm looking for as a place to start. |

Any suggestions (drums)?
You're welcome.
And one more thing; once you're done with the widening, listen to it again MONO and make sure it still sounds as punchy as you want it to. Everything must work well MONO, because (hate it or not) most music is experienced more monaural than you think.

Here's a new mix with different levels; bringing in the close mics more, adding compression, etc. I think it's getting closer....I haven't addressed the toms yet....need to work on that bass drum.... |

Re: Any suggestions (drums)?
You need to have boom, smack, and click.
First try to boost 50-60Hz or everything below 100Hz, whichever sounds better to you. Then boost at about 3-5kHz range to get that smack. You might also want to compliment it with a slight boost at about 6-8kHz range to get that click. What you don't want is mud, so cut at about 250-400Hz range to make it sound nice. Remember, I have not heard your raw track, these are just starting points.
