Regarding #7, Blackmagic Cards in the same computer as Protools. Is this really approved? I thought these cards were approved only for VSattelite use.

I ask because I'm still using an Aurora FuseX in a PCIx setup, and would be interested in the same approach if I moved to a newer computer/system.

Richard (or anyone else), how does this work in regards to consistent frame accurate start?

Thanks,
jim

Hi Jim,

Yes, that is correct - Blackmagic cards are approved for use with Pro Tools on a Mac Pro, either installed in the actual Pro Tools system, or configured as a Video Satellite LE. It will give you a very similar setup to what you have currently with your Aurora card.

See here for more compatibility information: http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?...5&itemid=36632

Regarding Frame Accurate Start, assuming you are on an HD system and using the Blackmagic Decklink card, you can lock both to video reference to guarantee frame sync.

I hope that helps.

David

Actually, this is the case for all CODECs, as there is no on-board hardware for decoding, unlike AJA and the old PipePro cards.

However all most Mac Pros will deal with all QuickTime CODECs with minimal effort, apart from un-compressed HD... obviously.

I think to keep this post more universal for all post folks, the options that are available for PC (windows) usage should be noted. From what I see, 1, 3, 4, 5, & 6 can be done on a PC. I don't know about 7 & 8. I know 2 cannot.

True only if you are using only one video card. Many of us are successfully using two video cards for two or even three monitors for Pro Tools and one for picture.

Default Blackmagic PPC

Blackmagic on PPC

Original Decklink and Decklink Studio
Works perfectly under Protools 8.

Using jpeg codec you can even output HD material via SDI to hdlink
Simple output of DV is also no problem.

Protools 6 to 7.4 I had no luck!
