Default 11 Rack & SM7B

Hey guys, I was wondering if the 11 Rack would be able to supply the amount of gain to supply the Shure SM7B? Someone said I would need to get another a preamp for this. Any thoughts? Thanks,
David

Hi

No need for a pre amp as the Eleven Rack has phantom power in the Analog XLR inputs so just plugin the mic and turn up the gain and go for it

If you want better quality that is another question but for starters the Eleven Rack does the job ..

I have never tried my sm7 on the 11r. I honestly don't think it will. My hot preamps like API and Adl 600 I crank it pretty good and my x73 w a descent amount of gain, I push it really hard w the sm7.

Sm7 does not need phantom power, just a LOT of gain to use it. Problem is that when you crank up cheaper pre's, the noise floors of them get horrible and can add unbearable hiss and hum to the signal. You need a pre w a lot of headroom or quality enough that the noise floor does not ruin it at higher gains.

Yea sorry I didn't think about that. It is 05:05 a.m here in sweden so I am starting to see double \m/
We have two SM7b and you are right about them needing a better mid level preamp but I thought the OP asked if the SM7 would work with the Eleven Rack but maybe as you say, the quality will not be so great considering they are a bit "demanding" when it comes to input gain and power

I would try and see what it sound like before I go and buy an expnsive preamp.

Thanks guys for the responses. It's much appreciated. Maybe if I got something like the Art Tube MP to go with the 11 R & the SM7b, would that be good? http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/TubeMP/

I'm thinking about getting the SM7b b/c I'm a baritone & sometimes scream... but with all this uncertainty about it being able to work well with the 11R; maybe I'll get an Audio Technica 4040...

Its been quite a few years since I have not used the sm7 on a metal band for vocals. Matching it up with the right mic pre, it can be magic. Honestly though I am using it with quite a bit higher end mic pre's (not trying to be a snob, just honest) so I am not quite sure how it will work with the 11r or MP. I want to say the sm7 needs around 65db of good clean gain for good performance. This can obviously vary with volume of performance, but is usually my starting point. If time permits this weekend, I will plug it in the 11r.

I would get a condensor microphone like the AT or a Rφde NT2000 or something around 200-300 dollars. The SM7/b is a broadcast mike and sometimes used for rock vocal and rigging up guitars etc so if you need a good mic for vocals the condensor mics are preferable. Look for a used AKG 414 or a Neumann TLM102/103 or similar. Much less gain and input power needed and are geared toward vocals. Now I know Metallica and MJ used the SM7 along with others but mind you that they also used a Sony C800 and C-800G (10K) so I would advice to go with a mic like the ones above (not Sony maybe) but a good 200-500 dollar mic with Phantom power feature.

Best
Chris

The SM7 need a lot of gain for sure

Has anyone tried the Cloudlifter 25 dB inline gain box with one?http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/CL1Cloud/

I'm thinking it maybe a good stopgap piece if the 11R comes up short
