Default Best control surfaces for PT12

Hello,

I'm currently spec'ing out a new Pro Tools system that I will be using for composing. I've been looking around the forums to get an idea of what works best for with the current iteration of PT12.

Avid Artist Mix--looks great, but no scrub wheel or transport. I could buy the Dock Control for that, but it only comes with one fader, and I think two surfaces might be pushing the budget a bit

Then there's all the HUI interfaces: the QCon Pro, Presonus Fader8 and Behringer X-Touch. The scrub wheel interests me on the QCon and X-Touch. Part of the draw of this is that I want the option of not looking at a screen all the time while mixing. Some people report no problems, others report disasters/crippled features due to HUI.

Basically, my main use for this in terms of needs will be mixing while taking a break from looking at the screen. Options for recording and playback would be a plus. I may be using other DAWs in the future along with PT depending on client needs (eg wwise) as well.

Thanks for any recommendations anyone might have!

I'm running an Artist mix and an Artist Control. Works well for me.

Artist Mix and Transport here. In all honesty, I get very little use out of the scrub wheel(but YMMV). Placing an artist Mix on each side of a DOCK would seem like a pretty nice setup

hi shane, i have a transport as well .. older Euphonix version and right now it is on it's side on the floor .. i was only using it for the scroll wheel .. now that the Pro Tools | Control app came out i have been waiting for some sort of scroll strip to be added .. and Flip fader for Sends .. but it has been quite awhile now and nothing new ..

HUI - yeah, i am in the same boat looking for something with more control ..

if i was using in more than just PT i would probably go a different route than EuCon .. and may end up gong that way ..

the Fader 8 and Qcon look cool

Behringer X-Touch via HUI here, it is what it is.

I too have an Artist Mix that I use along with the Pro Tools control app on an iPad Air2 on a sturdy stand.

The Dock would be a nice addition, but will have to wait in my case.

YES, a Dock between to AMs would be killer, I agree Albee. Sort of a mini S6.

What happens with the single fader on the Dock in that situation?

I can imagine banking getting a bit cumbersome, with an odd number of faders - or anything that isn't a multiple of 8.

I used to use Two Artist Mixes alongside an Artist Control. Nowadays I use the S3. I wanted the extra rotary encoders, and given that the touch screen on the Artist Control went the way of the Dodo when the free iPad app came out for me, I now use the S3 and iPad control app in tandem. Does everything I need it to do. :)

I will say though, if I was on a limited budget and could only get one thing, it would be an Artist Mix.

Fader wise (smooth and noise)?

Daytime Duality to Lab 2 with two-Mix or S3

It sounds counterintuitive, but if I had to choose between PT|Dock and Artist Mix, the Dock wins every time. MUCH deeper with automation modes and plug-ins, better build quality, great transport... more than compensates for the single fader. Attentioning that fader is easy. Onscreen faders are very Slate-like.
