Best video card for cheese grater Mac and HDX?
Hey all,
I had some hot rod graphics card in my cheese grater Mac Pro that required the extra power source in the Mac Pro. Now that I'm bumping up to an HDX card, I'll need that power source for the HDX, so I'll "downgrade" my graphics card. I'd still love a graphics card that has at least 1 HDMI output on it. A second HDMI would be nice, but if it's a DVI, that could work, too. Anyone have a great suggestion for good video performance from a single space, no-extra-power-needed type of card? Thanks in advance for any info... J |

Re: Best video card for cheese grater Mac and HDX?
there are "y"-power-cables for mac-pro avaiable....
i use one along with ati5870 ( 2 Power cables) and HDX ( 1 cable) so no need to downgrade graphics - card. btw which graphics card you use and how many monitors you want?

Re: Best video card for cheese grater Mac and HDX?
Oh, interesting! I'm out of town at the moment, and I don't off the top of my head recall which exact card I'm using. As I recall, it has at least 1 HDMI (although I think it has 2), a DVI and 2 Mini Display ports.
I have a total of 4 monitors working; one for ProTools, two for client monitors in the Control Room and one in the Recording Room for ADR, etc. Thanks for letting me know about the power "Y" cable. I'll search one out... |

Just curious as to what your experience has been with the 5870 driving monitors on the DP connections. I assume it will work with the 1920 x 1200 DP monitors, but have not tested the DP connections with the 2560 x 1440 monitors.

Re: Best video card for cheese grater Mac and HDX?
Thanks for the tip. I bought a QVS display port to HDMI converter (up to 4K/60Hz Active Ultra HD) that works with a MacBook Pro TB to HDMI (at 60Hz), and got both the 4K monitor and a 2K monitor working simultaneously with the 5870 in the Mac Pro. The 2560x1440 monitor works fine direct with the DP connector, and the 4K monitor works on the DVI, but at 30Hz. The DP to HDMI converter will also display on the 4K monitor, but only at 30 Hz.

The Y cable for splitting power from my Mac Pro's board to cover both plugs on my video card is this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Everything works perfectly; full 4K to the main monitor, no problems feeding the 2nd monitor, and power to the HDX card. As the others have said, hopefully this solves your problem. Just wanted to provide the links to the stuff I used successfully.
