I've been running MP 5.1 with Catalina and TB3 (Titan Ridge) connected to an RME UFX+ without any issues at all - actually the performance is noticeably better than USB.

There are many guides how to get it working, you just need to follow simple steps and have patience to solve any unexpected issues...
I already have 5,1 and that seems logical.

I suspected it wouldn't be a hassle from what I've bee watching. although that one video did have me concerned with all those wires and gadgets.

I have a Sapphire RX580 and boy does that help with graphics. I don't know much about OpenCore, but my understanding is that you can do some great tweaks on that graphics card.

That's two that has chimed in using the Titan working flawlessly (NICE).

In this case it's a no brainer... You'd be surprised how much more those Mac Pros can go - Mine has 2x 3.47Ghz CPUs, 128GB RAM, running OpenCore with the following:

- Catalina (native support with OC, no need for patches or hacks)
- Slot1: RX580 - awesome gpu upgrade!
- Slot2: 1TB NVME SSD (it just fits and does not touch the RX580's fan)
- Slot3: PCIE card with 2x USB3.1 ports
- Slot4: Titan Ridge with 2x Thunderbolt 3 ports (among others)
- Full H/W acceleration on the GPU/RX580 for video decoding/encoding
- Startup screen on vanilla RX580 (not patched for macOS)

Plus of course you can have up to 4x SSDs (drive bays), and extra 2x SSDs (replacing CD/DVD) - not the fastest, but more than enough for audio work, so you get 6x SSDs all internal (no external wires like on the 6.1).

It can take whatever I throw at it without any problems... and it's very quiet and stays cool (I rarely hear the RX580s fans ramping up).

The only thing to be aware of is the new breed of apps/plugins that require AVX support. That's not gonna happen on those old Xeons, so check if you use or planning to use one of them (for e.g. Massive X and some newer IK Multimedia stuff I guess).

samtrino that refreshing to hear.

1.Catalina (native support with OC, no need for patches or hacks)
I want to do the opencore thing, but seems a little involved, is there a video for that ?

2.The only thing to be aware of is the new breed of apps/plugins that require AVX support.
First time I've heard of AVX, is it AAX ?
Okay read up on AVX, I understand now, thanks.

3. Startup screen on vanilla RX580 (not patched for macOS)
So I gather no boot screen ?

Please forgive to throw this at you. I'm really excited though.

I was actually referring to AVX (Advanced Vector eXtensions) — those are extensions to an x86 CPU’s instruction set that dramatically speed up some operations.

Software that needs AVX won’t even start on CPUs without those extensions, like the Xeons in an MP 5.1. There was some talk about emulating them in Sw but it really defeats the purpose, I doubt there will be an effective workaround so it’s safer to assume they will never work... Some recent examples are Massive X and UA Luna.

More details here:

What's the process for OC, and do you install Catalina first for OC?
thanks.
