Default Re: THE fastest computer for an 001 w/PTLE 6.1?

Okay folks, in 2007, here is what I got. This thread can be useful those people who every once in a while wish to build a rock solid Digi 001 system. This of course was based on the requirements of Allen in the Best Desktop forum. Bear in mind though, that some of the links in that forum are a little outdated, and some better cheaper components (i.e. larger hard drives for the same price) are available. Here it is:

Digi 001 System Parts

A8V Motherboard + AMD 4000+ Single Core Processor Combo - $95.94
Thermaltake CL-P0200 80mm Silent Heatsink/CPU Fan 939 - $27.99
CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) - $54.99
Western Digital Caviar SE WD1200JB 120GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA100 x 2 - $49 Each
Memorex 16x Dual Layer DVD Burner - $25
XPCase With Thermometer Display - $19 (eBay - From XPCase Store)

I could've maxed out and gotten the newer $250 750GB HardDrives or spent more on RAM ($84.99 for 2GB). However, being that I came from a rock solid 1.8P4, 512MB system, which never crashed (until the hard drives failed, lol), this is a step up for me.

Lol, I decided to NOT upgrade to a Digi 002 or HD system unless I make a hit, or start making REAL money from my recordings and publishing.

Thanks to everyone.

Perfect post! I'm in a similar situation I don't need much more than my 001 which has worked great for many years, but would like to try BFD drumsand or some other soft synths and I can only upgrade my RAM to 1 gig, so I'm thinking of upgrading my computer. It seems that I could build a new computer that would work for my 001 for pretty cheap ( under $600.00) and it looks like your proposed sytem would be ideal. I would appreciate a follow up on how your system comes together so I could know how to proceed. The only other things I see that I would like to do that may differ from your system would be to upgrade the RAM (2gigs or maybe 3, I've heard that BFD is very RAM intensive) and to have at least 3 hard drives (1-system, 1-audio, 1-BFD). Does that AV8 motherboard acommodate 3 hard drives? Please follow up with your findings and good luck, happy building, etc!

Thanks
Jeff

Hi guys! Nice to see there's some 001 interest after all these years. Like you all, I see no reason to upgrade at this time. If the 001 was able to take on Dual processing and use higher Pro-Tools versions, I'd never upgrade period, lol (I think Digidesign acknowledged that, lol).

I didn't receive my components yet, but they were shipped, so only time will tell. I'll make sure I keep you all informed with how everything works out.

AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego 2.4GHz Socket 939 Processor Model ADA4000DKA5CF - OEM
Item #: N82E16819103037

Were advertised for $88 as a combo deal at NewEgg. The combo deals are good until July 31st, so if you want to make purchases, I'd make a move on it now. They have better combos available with the same board. I only purchased that particular processor/mobo combo because the 4000+ is supposedly the fastest single core processor available from AMD.

I thought about buying an even faster Dual Core (the A8V supports them), but didn't want any issues whatsoever. Furthermore, I figured if I upgraded in the future, it'd be to the newer Quad Core and Octa Cores that have been grabbing everyone's attention lately. Then again, by that time, I'd probably be using the Digi 004 or something like that.

I purchases a new 16x Memorex Dual Layer DVD Drive from eBay for about $25. I'm going to port over my older 8x Single Layer Drive (faster backups) and use my old 32MB AGP card.

Oh, and by the way. The A8V board supports up to 4GB! I can't wait till later down the road, as some of the newer motherboards are able to support up to 128 and 256GB!!

I don't see an agp slot on that board. You may need a pci express video card.

After all this, I think I might scrap the order. This board would require me to go out and get XP SP2 and a PCI Express video card. I was comfortable with my AGP Card and I have XPSP1 (Legit) on CD. I think I might just call NewEgg, forget about the MOBO and AMD Processor and just move my old MOBO into a new case, and upgrade my P4 1.8ghz/533 to a P4 3.0 gHz/533.

If you already have an XP SP1 CD, you can make a SP2 CD:

slipstream SP2 to make CD

Thanks, I researched those links. I still think I'm going to send some stuff back, and use that money to get a digital camera. Lol. I figured I shouldn't be doing any MAJOR upgrades until I'm ready to go Digi 002 or 003. Otherwise, It'd be a waste of money considering my original Motherboard (Asus P4B533) still works and I could just upgrade my memory instead. I will be using the hard drives that I bought though. This old motherboard has a socket 478/533. Maybe I could just upgrade the processor from a 1.8 to a 3.0/533 for now.'

It's too much to deal with. My 001 system was rock solid for years and never crashed ONCE. Lol. I just had to wait for the hard drives to fail.

Just cancelled the motherboard order. I'm going to buy a new heatsink/fan instead to go along with my new case. NewEgg rocks. There were no questions asked, they just cancelled my order. Kudos to them.
