Is this the board you are talking about Sunburst?

Looks like I can avoid changing fans.....went in to the bios and was able to turn the cpu fan down to 1200 rpm, it is much quieter now. While I was there, I also turned off speed -stepping , which I believe is a recommended tweak. Also , reading the manual on the P5B deluxe, ASUS recommends only installing 3 Gb Ram on 32-bit os's

Thats the one I just bought. I see they are out of stock now.

I caved in and ordered the processer at 299.00.

I'm going on vacation friday and was having nightmares about staring at a pile of Quad parts and having the processer on national backorder I figured it was worth the 33 bucks not to spend the week twiddling my thumbs

6969 here are some other boards from the list the ASUS P5B-Deluxe This board has Texas Instruments on board fire wire and is a known good working board. its 176.00

The ASUS P5B 112.00 This board does not have built in FireWire, You would need to order the 31.00 Digi approved SIIG Firewire Card If you using a Mbox (which I beleive you stated) than you wouldn't need to order the FW card at this point. This is a known working board also.

The 132.00 ASUS P5B-Plus This board offers the VIA 6307 Fire Wire chip, This FireWire chip is known to work with Protools, Indeed its working fine on my P4C800E-Deluxe. This board has NOT been built or tested yet, There is no reason however that it shouldn't work. It would be nice to see someone build and test this board.

77PRO, Buddy I feel for you! Was that your local dealers screw up or Digi's. Whoever's fault that is they should throw you a bone for being so patient.

3 GB verses 4 GB, My understanding of this is that they recommend 3GBs simply because with the motherboards resource exclusion the actual usable addressable memory will be some where around 3.77 Gb. I have 4 GB on hand hopefully I'm not wrong!

Disabling everything your not using in BIOS and running one video card with a relatively small amount of memory MAY free up some system memory. We'll see.

BTW the way after all off the research, crawling the web for news, tabulating Dverb results etc it feels DAMN GOOD to finally have the ball in motion

My card has been charged and I have my stuff on the way. The last month of waiting has been killing me

What I'm building

Q6600

Asus P5B-Deluxe Wifi AP

Asus 1600 Pro fanless video card

4GB of Corsair XMS DDR2 1066 8500C5

36-74GB Raptor for the System Drive

74-150GB Raptor for the Audio Drive

320 GB 7200 Seagate for samples

Corsair 520w PSU

XP home

Going into my existing I-Star rackmount case with a water cooler.

I haven't ordered the hard drives or OS yet so I may just go with all 7200 RPM Seagate's and XP Pro

The Rapter's are probably overkill, I just always wanted to build a computer with 10,000 RPM drives I may go with the larger size Raptor to dual/triple boot.

What I want to do is grab a P5K Deluxe WiFi AP and test that also. I have some specific reasons I want a P5B Deluxe WiFi over a P5K P35 based board but I want to test the P35 stuff with 1066 and see how good it is. The best board will end up in the DAW and the other will be a Home Media/Backup storage server.

My plans are to benchmark each board with DDR2 800 and DDR2 1066 so we have a definitive answer as to the performance benefits of each memory speed and chipset.

If time permits I may try to run some mildly overclocked benchmarks at as close to the other factory processor speedsof 2.66 and 2.93 as possible to give a fairly solid idea of what the other Q series Quads CPU's might do. I am not a seasoned over-clocker so I'm not going to devote a lot of time to that though.

I also plan on testing each board with the USB Mbox2 Mini and the 002

Hopefully in a week or two we will have some solid answers

I'll be going for the Asus P5K Deluxe (or maybe even P5K-E) just as soon as I can get my hands ona Q6600, so probably by the end of the week or early next week.

I'm going to be suprised if you see any benefit out of that 1066Mhz ram unless of course you're going for a sizable overclock, or drop the multi to go for higher FSB.... Benches I've seen so indicate that the 1333FSB E6X50's aren't much faster if at all than the 1066 FSB conroes....?

Default Re: Intel Core2Duo ... anyone got one working yet?

jamtime picked up around 10 dverbs moving from DDR2 800 to DDR2 1066 running at 889.

I'll have the brand/grade of of memory to test with. Corsair XMS 800 and XMS 1066

I think I read the same article on FSB 1333 VS FSB 1066 were it states a 1% increase.

I can believe that because if the FSB isn't the bottleneck than speeding it up isn't going to make a difference. I dont think the FSB has been slowing the Core 2 series down that much.

Memory speed and FSB in this case are two different things.

We'll see-thats why I'm testing.

FWIW thanks for being willing to test a new board/ platform (P35).

I put up the Core 2 specs because there was some interest and no real resources.

But

I can really recommend something after its been tested and proven.

I'm anticipating the P35 IS going to be good though. Good enough for me to buy and test both chipsets. In two weeks we should know a bit more about P35

Looking forward to everybody's results.

The P5K-E uses the same VIA 6307 Firewire controller that worked fine on the P4C800E-Deluxe, The P5K-Deluxe is the same Agere chip as the P5K-Deluxe WiFi AP I'm building. The Agere chips are old Lucent Technologies brand chips so hopefully they will be fine. I don't know that info will be off any help to you or not.

Was this with an OC or by using memory dividers (changing DRAM:FSB ratio)?

I meant to say (type) P5K deluxe Wifi AP. I'll be using that board with a (hopefully G0) Q6600 and 2GB G.Skill PC2 6400 HZ. Not sure about graphics yet, but I'll probably go for a 320Mb 8800GTS for the odd occasion tha I play games.

For CPU cooler I'll be looking at the Noctua NH-U12F (with the 800RPM fan), Thermalright 120 Extreme and there are other options that should allow for a safe 3.0GHz OC on the Q6600. I'll be keeping my 74Gb Raptor (for OS), 200Gb SATA and 320Gb SATA from my current P4 and dithching the 120Gb PATA drive maybe for a 500Gb SATA which are at the moment the best value. If my OCZ PSU can't handle the new bits then I'll go for a Corsair HX520 and I'll also ditch the PATA DVD-RW for a Pioneer SATA DVD-RW.

I have an ADS Pyro 64 on order at the moment, but that still hasn't arrived (been waiting nearly a month!!!!) so I'm not all that fussed about the onboard Agere controller.

Anyhow when I get it all going I'll post the specs
