Default Best Soudcard and LIne 6 Guitar Port?

Hi Guys,

I just picked up the book "Producing in the Home Studio with Pro Tools". It comes with a copy of PT Free on the CD, and I have just installed it on my system.

I currently have an SB Live! Platnum card, but I have read that the SB cards have issues with latencey and "drift" (whatever that is). Therefore I am in the market for a new sound card in the $150 dollar range. The book and the PT Free docs do say that they recomend not using any PT hardware, however they go on to say that PT Free will work with the AM III card.

It looks like I can get an AMIII card, or an M-Audio AudioPhile 24/96 card for about $150.

Which one is actualy better and will work better with PT Free?

Also, has anyone had any sucess with recording any guitar tracks using a Guitar Port as a selected input? (I know this works with Cakewalk and Acid, but I am not sure if PT will let me do it).

Thanks!

-Dan-

Since Digi made the AM III that would be the logical choice. PTF has a lot of problems with higher end cards. The more you spend the worse it can get.

Get the amIII, spend the $75 for ptle, and start using ptle. Beats ptfree in every aspect. Latest version of ptle (6.1) runs on winxp home or professional, as does the intermediate (5.3.1)

ptle is smooth, ptfree usually not
ptle with amiii will give you 128 samples latency. My test with ptfree and a sb 128 pci only worked with 8000 samples or so latency
ptfree is 8 channels. ptle is 32 channels

should i go on?

Be sure to read and srutinize the compatibilitypages. PTle is picky....

Thanks for providing your test data.

Where can I get the full version of PTLE for only $75?
