I was recently pointed towards this video, which does a good job describing the different factors in what makes a computer perform well with a DAW, compared to other resource-intensive programs.
CPU Performance Vs. Real-Time Performance in DAWs - YouTube I highly recommend that anyone who uses as DAW should watch this. Please share with your networks. I would have put it in the PT 2019 forum, but I have a suspicion it would have been moved out. |

Thanks.
Interesting. Might seem like obvious stuff to many folks, but notice how he gets poorer performance when booting from a PCIe SSD than from a SATA spinner. 10 minutes or so into the video. |

It’s a SATA SSD not a spinner.

The SATA bus is scanned first, which is why a SATA SSD boots faster (most of the time) than a PCIe SSD. This depends on if you mix HFS+ and APFS formatted drives. And some other details.
For everything else a PCIe SSD will blow everything away. |

That was a very informative video. It has me wondering now if the issues I sometimes have with real time performance are caused by exactly the sort of issues he talked about here. Maybe its not my CPU after all. What I need to find out is everything that's hitting on my CPU besides my Pro Tools sessions. Thanks for sharing this video.
