Default Delay when recording vocals...

MBox2
ProTools LE 7.0
WinXP
AMD Athlon 64
1.5 Gig of RAM

When recording vocals I have this terrible delay through the MBox if the MIX knob is anywhere but fully left. But then I can't hear anything else if it is.

I've tried setting the PLAYBACK ENGINE options but to no avail. If I lower the number of voices to 128 samples the echo is a little tighter but then I get an error saying my system is running out of memory and I should remove some plugins from the mix. If I raise the number of voices the delay gets longer.

Anyone have a fix for this? I really need to record vocals and this is throwing them way off.

Mute the channel in Protools you are recording to.

DOH!

Well, yeah, I guess I could just do that. Thanks.

But is there anything I can do withing PT to fix it? I would think it's a latency problem, but I can't find anything relating to latency in there.

this aint within. If you got an external mixer lying around. I use it to get rid of latency when recording. If you don't know how to set up, it aint for you.

No, that IS how you do it with the Mbox.
If you had a 001 or 002 there would be a low latency monitoring option within PT itself.

Hmmm... I have the mic plugged directly into the MBox, it uses the phantom power just fine, and there is latency thru the MBox. (but it is not within). Okay... Care to elaborate a bit more, casperfun? How can this NOT be an internal problem? It's definitely not external.

Well, I'll give ya credit for at least trying to help, casperfun, but then ya killed it with that lame comment at the end. If ya don't mind, I'll be the judge on what is or isn't for me. Not everyone on here has been using ProTools forever, you know?

Be constructive, not destructive.

PEACE

If you check "low latency monitoring" that should clear up much of the problem. You may still hear a slight offset, but it shouldn't be enough to prevent you from working. The low latency option is found at the bottom of the Options menu on Pro Tools 7 LE.

Edit: I tried to attach a screenshot but the "attach file" feature has been turned off in these forums.

Here's a good read from Sound On Sound regarding latency in Pro Tools LE:

The "low latency monitoring" option is not available on the Digidesign USB interfaces (mbox, mbox 2 mini, mbox 2), it is only available on the firewire and PCI interfaces (001, 002, 002r, mbox 2 pro), so your suggestion does not apply to the original poster.

DJTMS, that is how the USB units function, it is not a "problem" that can be fixed or a setting that you are missing, and Mark (Aussie169) has given you the proper advice.

Then perhaps some of the other options outlined in the Sound on Sound article may work for him? I'm not familiar enough with the various versions of MBox to know for certain.
I did apparently miss Aussie169's post. Mea Culpa, or as the hipster's say: "my bad".
