Triggering drum machine with Pro Tools/11R - having problems

I cannot get Pro Tools to start and stop my drum machine. My interface is the 11R. The drum machine is connected to the 11R via the line inputs. I can hear the drum machine in Pro Tools and I can record on the "drum" audio track I created in Pro Tools. I have a MIDI cable going from the 11R MIDI out into the drum machine MIDI in. I messed around with all kinds of options in the MIDI setup window in Pro Tools (Mac) but can't get it to work.

Any suggestions? My drum machine is a Boss DR-3. The only thing I am concerned about is having Pro Tools control the start and stop of the drum machine.

Well, now I have PT triggering the drum machine but I don't have any audio coming into the drum audio track. I have the record enable button lit up. It will record the drum track but if I hit the space bar to play all of the tracks at once (not recording the drum track) in order to try to hear if I like the drum track with all of the other tracks, I have no audio coming into the drum track. This is so frustrating.

Try to switch the Input mode.

Either, TRACK>Auto Input/Input Only

or use the keyboard shortcut to toggle Alt+K (Option+K)
