Default Best DI / Reamp solution?

Hello,

I need some professional help. First off, I have a diploma in audio engineering so I know more than the average person.

I am going to be recording an album DI, and then will book an actual studio to reamp all of the tracks (Guitar, Bass, Synth, Vocals) and drums will be software/sample based.

The solution I have been looking at is the Neve RNDI http://rupertneve.com/products/rndi/ into an interface (any suggestions?), and then into a reamp box in the studio. I also was planning on sampling at 24/192k...thoughts?

Just wondering if any pros out there can give this newbie some guidance.

Thanks for reading.

Hi: welcome!

For reamping, Radial is very well known as a working solution, like the J48
http://www.radialeng.com/j48.php

As an interface, depending on your budget you can explore between the Focusrite Clarett, Antelope Zen and Universal Audio Apollo.

Regards.

The RNDI is a good DI, as are the Radial ones mentioned. I have the Radial ProRMP and it works great for reamping and is inexpensive.

You may find you don't need to re-amp everything. You may like the bass more direct, and synths don't usually benefit from going through an amp (although why not?) I have found running my old Ensoniq ESQ-M through my Summit tube preamp and tube limiter does give a great sound going in, so there's no reason you couldn't pass the signals through good outboard gear in the studio and "re-amp" it to another channel so you have the direct and effected tracks.

You might want to take advantage of all the EQ, dynamics and reverbs the studio has to offer. While plugins can get close, using a studio's echo chamber, or discrete EQ can make a difference.

I frankly don't understand how you make a record by listening to nothing but direct inject guitars and bass guitar and only imagining what those sounds will, you hope, one day be.

or, for that matter, how you get a great performance without hearing the actual guitar sound.

+1.

At the very least, throw a decent amp sim plug on there while you are tracking. The better amp sim plugs can sound pretty great. Try 'em out. Most players perform better in front of a real amp, though. Even better, print DI and a mic'ed cabinet to 2 tracks - a tried-and-true method. Or, use a Radial JD7 Injector to properly split the signal to multiple amps at once.

Re 192k: not needed or practical. Move along.

I'd expect the Neve DI will be great (never heard one), but there are LOTS of good DI options. Plus, a DI then needs to go into a decent mic pre... Another option is to skip the DI conversion electronics altogether, and plug right into an audio I/O interface that has a high-impedance -20db unbalanced input option (most do).

The Radial J48 mentioned above is great.

Finally, here is the secret to achieving the BEST tone ever (worth the time to watch): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwEsjN6BEaE

Good luck !!!

Thanks everyone for your feedback!

Of course I will be using amp sim plugins to track with........I will then use the dry signals with my practice amp to sample the sounds!

From what I can see the UAD interfaces seem to be best bang for the buck. You can even emulate hi end pre's :)

Yeah, I wish I had +100k to book a studio, session players, and have it mixed/mastered properly. But with 2018 tech, and my abilites, it's now possible to make this happen on my own terms. I just may be able to save up enough for a day of tracking at one of the remaining world class studio's. And although there is definitely a glass ceiling on my plugin mixing/mastering techniques, I'm cool with that. I'm doing this for me.

This album is going to be real, and from the deepest parts of my soul. Plus lately I've pretty much been metal AF so there's that too......

I'll post a link when it's done.

Thanks for reading. https://goo.gl/DCqvuN

Hey, I'll do it for 99k !!!

Kidding aside - yes you CAN do it all yourself, but I would caution you to not wear too many hats. Writer, performer, producer, tracking engineer, mixing engineer, mastering engineer ... something's gonna give. Do what you are best at, and enlist pro help whenever feasible. Just a thought !!!

One job at a time - vs - a diploma - vs - a lifetime of real-world pro experience (in any ONE area of expertise) are, well, VERY different. Can a top-tier concert master violinist "play" the 1st chair viola part? Uh ... maybe ... sorta. Even when you earn one diploma, it is in ONE area of study - NOT all related studies. That's my opinion !!!
