Default Secrets to opening older sessions in PT 7 HD

Howdy,

I'm wondering if anyone knows how to open sessions that originated in PT 4 or older
in PT 7.3 HD? Decoder kit? 3rd party software? Magic ring?
Or, it's obvious and I'm an idiot (it's possible). Either way,
I'd appreciate any tips.

Thanks in advance,

chap

Find a G4 install Protools 5.3.1
We are doing a re-mix project( From (Protools 4 1998) all the session had to be opened up in Protools 5 saved then opened in 7.3
None of the Midi tracks translated. It was a huge pain but it worked

I was going to try that but my G4 croaked. Plus, I would need to connect to some
digi hardware and install a pci card. Shouldn't this be a simple thing?
From the amount of responses, it doesn't appear to be a pressing concern for many
people.
Maybe it will get more light as more folks develop a need to reexamine older
material.

thanks,

chap

You would think that 7.3 would be able to import anything created on PT previous versions.

I guess your options are to fix your G4 or buy another... or find someone who has an older working system, and have them do the conversion for you.

But consider this, I've been in situations where i was convinced i couldn't live without the original version of something only to find out that my memory of the session was optimistically inflated.

In other words, are you sure it's worth the trouble? If you redo the session from scratch now, you might do circles around what you had.

I have no idea if this will work, but try this...

Make a copy of the orignal session folder first, then...
Get Info on the session file.

1 - If you think it is a Pro Tools 4 session, add ".p24" to the name for a 24-bit session.
Or ".pt4" if it is a 16-bit session.

2 - Check the File Type and Creator with something like the freeware utility:
Quick Change

Enter PT24 for file type and PTul for the creator.

3 - Choose your current Pro Tools application as the "open with" app.

Step 2 might help without the other steps, depending on what the original file format was. It sounds like it could have had the resource forks stripped somewhere along the way.

5.x would require all the audio not just the session... if memory serves.
