Default Setting Virtual Memory

Hello, I have read that setting minimum and maximum virtual memory to 1024 may help buffer errors. Does that number change depending on how much RAM I have, or is 1024 the optimum number for PTLE regardless of RAM? I have 2048 gb of RAM. Thanks.

The two standard practices I know of are to either set the swap file (aka virtual memory) to twice your ram (both min and max to lock the size), or to turn it off entirely assuming you have ample ram. 2GB should be ample to go without, but you could go either way. If you're using an older parallel ATA boot drive you should probably go without, SATA offers better access speeds thanks to NCQ (another story).

If you're using virtual memory it's beneficial to set the swap file immediately after installing the OS so the swap file location is as close to the "beginning" of the drive as possible, which offers slightly better access times. The key reason for setting it to a fixed size is that you don't end up with a swap file fragmented all over your drive.

Excellant advice and spot on the money.

Digidesign recommends 1024 for min and max regardless of the RAM you have installed.

Cheers,
