Am I too excited or has Mbox 2 just become a joke?

There's lots of portable audio interfaces on the market. The Mbox 1 & 2 are the only ones that works with PTLE. With the addition of M-Powered, there's even more options, the FW1814 for example gives you even more I/O than the ultralite in the same size box, as well as word clock. If you don't need to run ProTools, the ultralite is probably great, MOTU makes good interfaces, but they do you no good if you're running PT.
