Pretty much nails it as a PT problem with the Fast Track.
Does your Mic need phantom power?

No usually I just use dynamic mics. Do you think that having phantom power turned on could be causing the issue?

I don't know but its probably not a good idea to have it on unless the mics need it. How many mics do you use?

Okay i'll turn it off and see if it makes a difference. I use just the one mic as the fast track only has one XLR input. Most of the time i just DI with guitar.

Turning off phantom power hasn't made any difference to the audio playback, still distorted and off time periodically.

Ever consider an Eleven Rack? - they keep getting less expensive - http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ElevenRack

Can you use Pro Tools for recording with the Fast Track and mix/playback using ASIO4ALL? If not, you could record with Audacity and the Fast Track, export the tracks as wav files, then import them into Pro Tools for mixing/playback with ASIO4ALL. Another (purely ASIO4ALL with Pro Tools) option would be to build a custom cable to connect you computer's mic input to your mic and DI source (assuming the computer has a stereo mic input.)

Is there a way i can use ASIO4ALL as the playback engine and set the Fast Track as the recording input?

Not that I know of with PT without switching playback engines (unless ASIO4ALL supports doing so). But you should be able to do so (for tracking, etc.) with Audacity.
