Default my new iMac crashes frequently

I have been trying for several weeks to make my new iMac (May 2008 model, core 2 duo, 2,66 GHz, 4 GB) work.

There's frequent crashes (iMac closes suddenly completely) or it loses connection with Digi003 interface. There's also a lot of buffer size errors (with very small sessions, too).

No incompatible plug-ins, and in all ways I have tried to check the usual "to do first" list carefully.

I have tried it with both fw 400 and 800, and have also tried chaining the interface via my external drives (Western Digital 320 GB, Lacie 750 GB).

Does any one else have this kind of a problem?

Please post the rest of your system specs. Read the "Help Us Help You" thread if you're not sure what to include.

Here are the other specs:
Pro Tools 7.4.2
Mac OS X 10.5.4

A couple days ago I updated the OS from 10.5.3., and the playback maybe runs better now, but today when recording I had again lots of crashes & many buffer size errors. Especially the La Cie Quadra d2 seems very unstable (crashes every tenth minute...). I use the La Cie from the FW800 port of the iMac, because it and the iMac have only one FW400 port (and that's needed for the 003). But the WD seems quite unstable, too.

Any idea, is this more related to the iMac (bad luck crappy FW port for example) or the Pro Tools / 003?

Pretty sure you need 10.5.4 for starters. Next thing is to not use the FW800 port. Daisy-chain the 003 and drive with FW400 only and try that. I know the preferred chain is computer>drive>003, but the oter way will work. Just be certain to dismount the drive before shutting down the 003 so you don't lose or corrupt your audio data.

When you say Crashes and iMac suddenly closes completely, do you mean the OS crashes where you get a dark vail that comes down over the screen with different language characters on it and you have to hold the power button down to restart the iMac?

What if you disconnect your external and other peripherals completely and record a test session to the desktop with a few tracks does that work?

Turn off airport and bluetooth from system properties.
Also what buffer errors exactly are you getting? list the 4 digit error codes

The iMac closes down without any warning. So the power is immediately off.
I've got the same problems when trying sessions running from the iMac drive.

Airport & bluetooth & spotlight etc are off. (I checked out the General troubleshooting http://duc.digidesign.com/showthread.php?t=54888)

Sorry didn't have time today, so I don't yet have the digits of the errors which were
- system held interrupts for too long
- lost connection with 003
- not enough cpu power
- buffer size
