What happen to my Pencil tool

I used to be able to zoom into a dialogue track where I heard a pop or click and redraw a smooth waveform with the pencil tool however that tool doesnt come up. Im unable to redraw the waveform. Am I doing something wrong?

Does the audio stem from an OMF or AAF?
Try selecting the part you want to draw in, then hit sft + opt + 3 to consolidate, then try drawing again.

Yes it was from an AAF and consolidating it fixed the issue. I would've never thought of that.

I never have this problem with I copy the audio from the OMF on import.

I can't really remember, but I think, I used embedded files with link instead of copy, so you could indeed be correct.
Makes perfect sense actually, since "copy" creates new files, as "consolidate" also does.

You used the "link" function.
"Copy" allows pencil.

I think it's a good habit to consolidate before penciling anyway, as pencil is one of the few destructive edits in PT. It changes the original file without making a copy or denoting it was changed...

In some workflows (like mine where editors do prep just linking to the OMF/AAF media, and we relink their sessions on mix stage) it's critical to consolidate because you might do a pencil fix and then relink to an unfixed file because PT makes no name distinction between the two...
