Re: Sm58 on drums?
If that's all you got then just do it. I'm sure it will be fine. The sky will not fall.

Re: Sm58 on drums?
58's are very similar to 57's, they tend to work pretty well in most applications where you'd use a 57. Neither the 57 or 58 are ideal tom mikes, but they'll get the job done.I tend to get the bulk of my toms from my overheads. The JTS mikes you're going to put on the kicks are made for kick drums (if you're talking about their NX-2), so they ought to be fine.
I have no experience with JTS mikes. I notice that their kick mike is priced near what an AKG D112 is. The D112 has a long, solid history on kick drums. That's not to say there aren't BETTER mikes out there, but......

Re: Sm58 on drums?
I use, and actually endorse, JTS mics. I have a complete set from when I was with Hatchet, and I use them for many, many recordings. My kit gets recorded about 18 days a month. NX-6s, NX-2s, and NX-9s, I believe. I use a 57 on top snare, NX-6 on bottom snare. Sounds great. My tom sounds are really good, too, and they are NX-6s, except the floor toms, which are the kick mics, the NX-2s. These are good drum mics, real fat. My only problem with them is the plastic clip lock. I have broken at least 2 so far. The kick mics, the larger NX-2s, are great on floor toms, kicks, and bass amps. I didn't love the NX-9s, the small diapraghm condensers, I noticed some fuzzines on overheads, so I traded them in for a new set. I was told that the first batch had been improved upon. The next set was better, but I prefer my Oktava 012s. My recommendation would be to use a 57 on top snare, a NX-6 on bottom snare with phase flipped, NX-6s on smaller toms, and NX-2s on floor toms. I like the sound of those mics on toms better than 57s. They are a little fatter. Of course, that is, if you have them, I know you said you have only 1 JTS mic. Of course, you could try anything anywhere, and may get some good results. A 58, for example may get you a good tom sound. The 57 is the standard on snare, and I use D112s on kicks usually. Good luck!
