Default reversing phase on one side of stereo track.

Hey,
I just tracked a band... live 10 songs to one session. I plan on doing a rough mix through all 10 then saving the individual songs for the final mixes. I have some phasing issues on the drum overheads that were recorded to a stereo audio track. Now I know I could open 2 new mono tracks and import the overheads then reverse the phase on one but I'm looking to see if there's a way to work on one side of a stereo track.

Anyone???

thanks

Sure there is!
- insert a multi-mono plug in such as the trim
- unlink the plug in at the upper right hand corner of the plug in window
- right next to that button select left or right and put one of them out of phase
The link button looks like OO
Later

Phase reversing one track in the stero track will cancel out any mono tracks in the mix. In order to correct the phase problem with your overheads you need to remix, and find the proper phase relationship between the overhead and the remaining drum mics.

Hope this is helpful.

I am acutally only phase reversing one side of a stereo drum overhead track within a stereo mix. this should have no effect on the overall stereo buss... right? My question was to flip the phase on one side of the overheads since I failed to do so on the mic pre going in. I was looking for a plugin way instead of dragging two mono overheads left and right and reversing the phase on one.

The multiple mono trip plug unlinked did the trick!

thanks again!

It sounds like you're trying to fix a phase problem with polarity. These are two different things and while flipping the polarity on something might help it get more "in phase" with other signals, it's not always there. i.e. if you've got a source that's only 90º out of phase with other material (or 1/4 of a cycle) and you flip the polarity - that's sending it 180º out, resulting in a signal that's still either -90º out or 270º out.

So, I'd recommend sliding that stereo track onto 2 mono tracks and slipping them around a little (forward or backward) until you find a better phase relationship with each other and the other drum tracks. We're talking milliseconds here, sometimes only samples. This is the best you can do if you can't go back and retrack the drums with proper phase-aligned mic placement.

I have used this method successfully to correct phase problems while miking guitar/vocals simultaneously.
