Check out the multi sampler. Undertone has 2 parts to it. A simple sampler that is good for room tones, exteriors even and a multi sampler for manipulating and creating sound design with a whole lot of very cool features.

Exactly. Even if the Production sound mixer was able to get some room tone before shooting, it never matches.

Sampling it with undertone is the only quick way to get a matching tone. Ambi Match never matches.

Have them record some while they’re there. Simple solution, just requires thinking ahead a little.

Dunno if you're just trying to get me riled up here but use your noggin. I don't even know the production mixer's name. We're all cogs in the machine.

It isn't that simple. It really depends on if there is even time. Which nowadays there really isn't.
And try getting a set of 40 people or more to be quiet for even 10 seconds. Time is money, and recording room tone isn't even a priority in the line producer or directors eyes.

I'd rather have a properly placed LAV than room tone that works 10 percent of the time because of the tonal shifts.

Maybe that worked 25 years ago, but I can far easier build fill from dailies than expect decent room tone I can rely on.

There's typically loop-able tone between takes. I usually find it after the slate and before action. It may not always match perfectly, but as suggested it's tough to get the producers to put time aside specifically for such things. There *should* be time, of course, but that's not the way of things on-set.

I'm working in non-scripted which is just chaos all around. I've been patching tone together in RX as needed.

I'm not the most experienced DX editor and don't claim to be an expert.

That sounds like a nightmare. Suggestion. Get 3-4 small tones, RX out the mess and Undertone it.
I got them to make handles so set handles. 5 sec is more than enough.

Don't forget to save your tones. Not elegant but good for backup.

And don't use Sony MDR headphones for editing.
