Yes, you cannot just buy anything and expect it to work.
Here's a great list with supported components:

Default Hackintosh with Pro Tools?

Yeah that's not actually accurate....

If u got with all natively supported components (ie Apple uses them in their own builds) u can have a dream of a stable machine

Example - GA-X79-UD5 - no extra mods/drivers needed - and the graphics card is the same GT460

Example my onboard FireWire chip is working on the Mac software out of the box.....no drivers needed and it's a VIA chipset and not Tex Instr. - I have a SIG card but don't need it

A little bit of work to get it set up yes thats true but I don't have spinning wheels anymore like I used to get on my 2008 Mac Pro 2 x quad core -

And with the look feel and yes stability of a Mac

Default Hackintosh with Pro Tools?

I think I looked at that mother board for osx and couldn't find much info. Some people trying to get it to work, but couldn't ever confirm it. I believe I was interested as tiger direct had a pre-built system on sale that used it.

Just my opinion on the hackintosh issue, but I'd stick to the socket 1366/2011 mobo builds for audio. Nothing wrong with the socket 1155 builds, but I'm not a fan of the gpu being on the CPU. Even if you're not using it. Totally my preference there. The 1155 builds seem quite robust. Also you can have 6-cores on the 1366/2011's. maybe even 8-cores if your board supports e5 Xeons. Or I've been dying to build a dual e5 16-core machine.

to DJ, I'd say you have nothing to lose by trying with your system. Just do yourself a favor and remove the hard drives(all of them for now) and make your attempt with a blank system drive. Once that is actually working, then I would add a recording drive and dig deeper. If it all fails, stick the old drives back in and you can still work with Windows(but take note of any BIOS settings you change in case you need to restore them)

Hey MEADS, thanks for all the info! Your specs and price range are the spitting image of exactly what I'm looking for. I might end up building that exact computer! lol.

So my question for you is what specific tweaks did you have to do to get your machine to work. Or is the process too long explain? I'm sort of just wondering once you have all the parts together and working and have installed the OSX disk, how long does it take to get it all working and what does it look like until you do. If it didn't take that long and you wouldn't mind sharing specifically what you had to do for your machine that would be great.

Also, I was wondering about hardware. What does your machine look like in the end, do you have a picture? All these parts are just boards and guts and such, I'm wondering do you have to build some sort of box to put them all in and then solder in usb ports and firewire ports and thunderbolt ports and a power button? That might sound like a n00b question this is just my first time so I'm not sure how the hardware interface gets incorporated.

Finally, what monitors do you use? I'm going to need a dual monitor setup, hopefully at least 27 inches each. Right now I'm using my macbook pro as one monitor and a 32 inch LG HDTV as a second, but the color on the TV doesn't look like the color on the macbook (even though i did my best to calibrate). This isn't devastating, but it is annoying when I have to color correct videos and always have to drag my source monitor down to the mac screen.

Once again thanks for all the help thus far

Default Hackintosh with Pro Tools?

Best thing with a Hackintosh is to go with what works - it's best to not consider it a BYOB (board)

This is b/c I don't want to spend any additional effort in making it work - I wanted a drop it in and mess with it for awhile and now I'm working and I don't think about it again

There are many people using many different boards and CPU (AMD's also) but that requires more workarounds

I didn't want to put that much effort into the software side of the configuration b/c it was my first Hackintosh possibly

I have the same build as Meads different case - a G5 (not for everyone) more work up front to make everything fit
