No point staying in an abusive relationship...

I've already moved on from the 11R. Next thing to drop is ProTools. Going to try out Reaper and PreSonus to see if I can bond with them.

Avid, this is how you lose customers.

For what it's worth, I've known a lot of people who've moved to Reaper from Pro Tools, Logic, Cubase etc. I haven't known any of them go back.

I've been using Reaper, Logic, Cubase, etc for a long, long time - now I'm a new Pro Tools user... maybe it's just the "newness" but I actually like it so far and am enjoying learning it.

For clarification: I don't dislike Protools. I dislike the nickle-and-diming approach to upgrades.

Someone is going to jump in and say "but new versions don't make yours obsolete". To which I will say, welcome to 2013, where other companies support their product with bug fixes and sometimes new features, at far more competitive prices and sometimes for free. As the differentiation between products declines, so too is the premium that customers are going to be willing to pay for little more than a brand name.

I do like the ProTools workflow. But my overall experience with Avid as a company has left me with a bad taste in my mouth, and I'm willing to put up with the learning curve to move on.

There have been many updates to "Pro Tools 10" in the last year. All of them free.

Im pretty sure he is referring to the price between major versions like 8 to 9, and especially 8 or 9 to 10.

This exactly. Give the time horizon of release, the upgrade from 9 to 10 was particularly distasteful after I had upgraded from 8 to 9.

Hi Benoni,

I was referring to the statement regarding bug fixes. These and minor feature tweaks have historically been free, and even as AVID moves away from the consumer segment this continues to be the case, even on the professional side of things. And yes, if we are speaking of major version upgrades, everybody charges for those. No argument there.
