Default Mbox Hum, 002 rack

I have two questions;

1) I have a bit of noise coming out of my Mbox. I have nothing when merely monitoring a signal if ProTools is not open, but once I do open ProTools, there is a slight hum that never goes away. What could be causing this?

2) Can you use the 002rack as a standalone preamp?

I'm having the same problem (I actually posted this earlier today- as you can see, it's 11:41 on a saturday nite and it's still aggravating me beyond consolation, and my girlfriend wants to kill me and throw the MBox out the window!!!!)

I'm getting a really bad audible hum from the analog inputs of the MBOX. I''ve had my Mbox about a week, and I guess I didn't really notice how bad the hum was until this morning- it's absolutely ruining the recordings!! It's unacceptably loud. I thought at first it was coming from the source (I had a Korg D1600's master outs going into the MBOX (w/ "line" as the source), there didn't seem to be too much hum with a guitar going direct, but it was just as bad when I plugged my keyboard in directly to the MBOX, and the same w/XLR (as a "mic" source.)
Please help me- do I have defective unit (which is what I'm assuming), or is there some sort of gain phase I'm not doing correctly.
please help!

I might add that the only hum i'm getting is from the inputs, and not neccessarily from monitoring the Mbox.
I wish I knew what was causing this. The hum starts as soon as I "record-enable" a track.

Try a powered USB hub.

This may sound really really dumb, but this worked for me. I use a 002 rack and had a hum when I played my electric acoustic through it. I plugged a standard 1/4 inch guitar cord into another channel of the 002 then put the other end just inside the waist of my jeans so that the metal end touched my skin. Hum disappeared. It was obviously a ground problem of some sort.

That was the quick fix - I haven't had time to research how to officially correct the situation. If anyone knows please advise.
