Understand, I had that "current ... type" also in mind. I just did not get the point as there's no "paste pan automation" in the menu (or eucon). Or did they changed in 2018? (I am on 12.5)

No. They did not change it.

"Paste" is paste. It takes whatever automation lane you copied and pastes it into the exact same automation lane type. So Pan = Pan. Volume = Volume. etc. For instance: you could copy volume automation to the same volume lane on another track.

"Paste to current automation type" takes one automation type and pastes it to a different automation type. Say you want to copy the automation you did on volume to the send automation lane. Or you want to copy the volume automation to a plugin's parameters (that you have enabled automation on.) If you did a normal paste it will not work. If you do a "paste to current automation type" it will paste the same automation to the send automation lane (if you have that lane open and selected.) Or say you want to do something wacky and have the volume jump up every single time you pan to the left. You can copy the pan automation to the volume lane.
