Digi001 End of Development?
I noticed when downloading my LE 6.4 upgrade that DigiDesign is dropping support for the Digi001 after this release.
Aren't there enough of us out there that have purchased these units, and find them perfectly adequate to our needs, to justify continued development for the 001? DigiDesign recommends are "hardware exchange", but I really don't feel like forking up the coin to buy a Digi002 when my current unit works just fine. Anyone? |

I hear you. BUT, this was announced long ago (although I see it as a plus that you didn't know - that means you were probably working instead of hanging out on a message board talking about working!!). In reality, it had to happen. The 001 uses old hardware architecture (PCI and SCSI). It's over 5 years old. The converters are weak, the pre's are decent at best. I try and look at it as a 'motivating' factor. If DIgi has to spend money always making sure that the 001 is up to snuff with software, then they are wasting time and money that could be used to develop the 003. And, if they develop the 003, you and I can sell our 001's and buy a used 002 for half the price on Ebay. I feel your pain - I really like my 001 and lack 'harness' problems. But, we've got to move forward sometimes. And hey, if we have to spend a grand on a new 00? every 5 years, we are WAY ahead of most people in the game.

Re: Digi001 End of Development?
If you have no issues...no reason to upgrade. About all I have seen of late are bug fixes...minor improvements..nothing earth shattering.
The application has several forks...one each for 001, 002, 002R and M•Box...maybe even AMIII.... If further development at reduced costs are to be realized...someone has to be booted out of the boat...making backwards compatibility nearly impossible if you want to add new features for the new products. Without needing to make the next release compatible with old cards, the next updates should come out faster and with added features (doubtful) and possibly more stable. Apple did it with OS 9 even though the install base of machines capable of running OS 9 is gigantic still...comparatively speaking. I think 6.4 runs great on my G4 Graphite machine...I'm actually looking forward to not cringing every time I apply an update...waiting for some horrible conflict to render my machine unusable.
