Back up.... Yes

Recording... No (cannot see what chipset it has, needs the oxford chipset as this is the only one that digi certify. Worth getting right).

Try LaCie
Either D2 Quadra or Hard Drive Quadra have TI chips

They look good.

Is there any that are a bit cheaper? I'm a poor student lol, also would you recommend getting a 1TB or would a 500Mb be enough?

I use a D2 Quadra 1TB personally.

a 500GB would be better but are harder to find these days.

with 1TB it should be partitioned in 2 parts and use only one part at a time. This gives you the best performance.

You can also order a drive from OWC

What advantage do you get from partitioning it as apposed to just using it as one big hard drive?

it prevents the head from having to retrieve data from all over the platter. Not really an issue with the smaller drives.
