Re: Best Tablets for the Avid S1 & Dock
I went down this rabbit hole late last year when I got my hands on my S1 to pair with my Dock. I have an Ipad 10.5" on my dock so when I got the S1 I wanted to maximize dollar savings and went with the galaxy Tab A. The latency and lag was so bad that I could not make it work. Literally meters freezing on screen. I did post on this and if you search my posts you can see replies from Eddie etc. They used the Tab A and said it was fine but for me it was a total disaster. The first comments were your network (wrong), then OS, etc etc etc. What it really came down to is that with a Tab A its a super low end tablet and the performance showed. I did a LOT of research and people really complained about the networking aspect of it being super freking slow. Thank god I bought from Costco. I returned it and picked up the cheapest 32gb Ipad and its been flawless since. I suspect as many have postulated that in a cheap tablet they cut a lot of corners and the networking is one. You dont have to spend a ton of money but I would NOT recommend a Tab A. I ended up spending about 100 more for the ipad (on sale) and it was night and day and has been flawless since. I wanted to love the Tab A. It looked beautiful but in the end it was a performance dog. For me I hate sounding like an Apple Fan Boi but they really are the better tablet for the job. As always YMMV.

Re: Best Tablets for the Avid S1 & Dock
Interesting. I've been using a Samsung Tab A here with a dock and it has been buttery smooth through my netgear wifi router.
On a similar note, what larger format tablets are out there that fit the S1 nicely? Whenever I try and google 12" or 11" tablet I really only end up with the Samsung S6 or iPad Pro. Does anyone have any leads on a cheap, larger tablet that suits the width of the S1 nicely while also not breaking the bank? It seems a little bit bonkers to relegate a $1000 tablet to general metering duty.

Re: Best Tablets for the Avid S1 & Dock
I have not seen anything in that larger format we all wish we had in a price we all wish we could afford. In short no. 10.5 is about as good as you get. In a couple more years that will change but right now any ipad pro is ridiculously expensive. Get 4 Ipad Pro 12" and 4 S1 and you are already well on your way to a used nice ass console.

Re: Best Tablets for the Avid S1 & Dock
Just got my two S1 together with a new TP Link C6 router and two Trekstor S11 tablets. They have 11.6" screens and are around 150 here in europe. Absolutely flawless and smooth operation, powerful enough for the AVID Control app.
Thanks to Mike from SMM! |

Fire 10 is the way to go and Avid uses them theirselves when demoing at gear shows and conferences like AES and NAMM

Re: Best Tablets for the Avid S1 & Dock
From my recent experience:
Fire HD 10 (gen 9) perfectly usable, a cheap option. Meters are smooth one minute, then lagging the next, but you can use everything without issue, apart from the latency as it relates to visual feedback. iPad Air on same Wifi About 3 times better in terms of lag, overall latency (meters hit much tighter now). Occasional mini-lags as it negotiates WiFi, but nothing like Fire HD. iPad Air with Ethernet adapter Even better, no lag that I've experienced. Might as well be built-in. Comes at at obvious cost, but at least I have an iPad now, that I can use for other things when not working. |
