The union has its place. It definitely prevents the directors and producers from taking advantage of the talent.

It is a creative industry and its not like bolting on tires to a new car.

It protects the producers in that they know they are getting highly skilled workers who can do the job within the budget and time frame given.

It protects the creative teams from extra long hours without pay, no breaks, working more than 5 days a week.
When producers and directors decide to make a picture change at the last minute, it takes time to conform and prepare.

If it had to be done under the same time frame of the original cut, everyone would be working late and basically for free to meet their new demand and picture change.

Since we are in a creative field, this happens often and protects the sound teams.

I just finished a project where the picture was unlocked without the knowledge of the sound dept and VFX. Nightmare. it was so bad it ended up having to re-cut all the BG's, all my FX & FY locations were toast! there was no extra pay to fix those issues.

just what are the LA rates for a "union gig"?

1) mixing for TV
2) mixing film
3) editorial

ballpark rates in the uk for freelancing in TV are: £40 per hour mixing (6 hour min) and for editorial £1500 per week. Film? not my forte - suspect a project buyout.

cheers
