Default VST plug in

I am a 69 year old musician/composer who recently got the protools 12.5 and i cannot find anywhere on my computer, sound card or laptop to plug in the vst key. Can anyone help an old man figure this out?

Welcome to the community.

Pro Tools doesn't support VST, all your plugins and virtual instruments must be AAX (PT10 and later) or RTAS/TDM (PT10 and earlier)

Please take a look at the "Help Us Help You" page that is linked on the forum header.

Go to Bluecataudio.com and look at Patchwork.

By vst key do you mean some kind of dongle for authorization to use a plugin? Do you mean the iLok2 needed to run PT? Those need USB2 ports to connect to. It would help us to help you if you could give us more info on your system like what kind of computer, operating system, sound card, etc. you are using. There's no such thing as TMI (too much information) when asking for help here.

Welcome to the community and good luck with recording. PT is not plug and play software and the learning curve isn't easy but the journey is well worth it. Learning new things will help keep the brain active and that is a good thing Remember - age ain't nothing but a number

Do you mean your iLok dongle? You need to have the iLok registered with iLok and plugged into a USB port on your computer in order to use PT. Most of us just leave the iLok key plugged in all the time on our studio computers.

Lynn:
I'd like to suggest a book that would be great for someone like you who's just starting out and that's the PT101 courseware book. It's an older book but the principles still work the same for more modern versions of PT. Should be available on Amazon.

And as always don't be afraid to post here and ask away. But like I said giving complete system info will go a long way to our being to help you out.

Make sure the I-lok is plugged into a USB 2 port...it hasn't been playing well with USB 3. I'd also highly recommend getting a 6" USB extension cable for it, so it doesn't stick out of the back computer and be prone to breakage.

Thanks for that info and the answer on what to do with it was given to you earlier. Something to keep in mind is that your use of the term 'vst' means nothing here as PT doesn't use vst format plugins but aax.
