I've grown up with Sony MDR7506's and I can't part with them. They are an integral part of my mix-checking. They are not perfectly flat (i.e. a little too bright in the 7506's is just about right in the real-world, etc.) but they translate well and tell you what's really going on.

IMHO second the best headphones are AKG K 1000. They would be arround $800-1000.
I own them and I never heard better headphones but I've never heard these $12000
ones ;(.
Apparently they are just slightly better.
Do they have big preamp?

Cmon guys, you're lookin at it all wrong.

List price $14,900
Sale price $11,900

You're SAVING $3,000!!!
(to spend on a nice mic pre, or a nice mic, or a cool synth, or a reverb, or a new compressor, or or or or or....)

Woah. Didn't expect such a great response. I think I may have given the wrong impression in the first place though. I like the idea of having mucho expensive 'luxury' headphones but I'd really call these 'lounge' headphones for listening pleasure and not for monitoring. You can bet your ass the Orpheus ($12,000) sound sweeter than something very very sweet but you can also bet your ass that they enhance certain frequencies (respone most likely to be a slight smilie).

What I am looking for is something with a very wide frequency range (monitoring those lows on headphones is impossible with the cans I have - see first message) coupled with a very flat response. The same principle when buying monitors.

Cheers,

Dj

All hi-fi joking around aside, DJ - the Etymotic's are exactly what you are looking for. You really should consider them.
