1.

But that is far from ideal. Bounce to 24 bit if possible also. Bring the mastering engineer 24 bit files. Do a search for more information.

For making your own CD's stick with 44.1/24 to 44.1/16. Use Dither if possible (Waves L1, L2 etc) in the last plugin slot of your master fader. With the other two formats you'll lose more doing the conversion.

For mastering, definitely stay with 24 bit.

Hope this helps,

Zep

why will you dither down to 16 bit ??? thats the masterings house job .
best sound ? the theory says " highest resolution cant be a mistake " . you can lower it anytime but you are unable to raise it . sure you can ... with lots of unneeded 000000000000000000000
i am still tracking 44.1/24 , i like the results ... even if they are " far away " from THE BEST . maybe if i lose my lazyness ill switch to 48k

I agree.

Track and mix at 44.1, and avoid the sample rate conversion mess. Also, bounce to disk at 24 bits and bring the mastering engineer something to work with. After its at 16 bits, its gonna be ahrd to do much good.

if you MUST mix to 16 bits (you aren't going to get it mastered for instance) make sure you use dither across the master fader as the last insert. Use the L1 or L2, set it to 16 bits, and fool with dither type, and noise shaping until you like the result the best. Then bounce to disk at 16 bits.
