Protools upgrade and dual core processors
Hello All,
I'd appreciate a little wisdom and/or insight. I running Windows millenium on a pentium 3 dell w/512 mb Ram and a 1GB processor. I am an old timer Le 001 5.1.1. As you can see I take a while to move on. Haven't had any probs with this system so far by the way. Its just that I want to use new programs like BFD and others. However I am considering a move to upgrade my system. I can't do it all at once. My question is can I run Le 001 upgrade to 6.4 on a dual core processor such as the intel xeon or the AMD 64 FX. Also, has anyone heard any pros or cons to the dual cores? Would there be any advantage to using dual core if I'm going to stick with 001 6.4 version? |

Re: Protools upgrade and dual core processors
While there is no direct advantage using a dual processor with your 001 and 6.4, you may still get a little boost as the extra cpu may help deal with the mundane Windows stuff that goes on in the background. I hope you get some answers on whether this will all work. Most of the folks that go "bleeding edge" with dual cpu's are the same bunch that always run the latest PT version as well.

Re: Protools upgrade and dual core processors
Exactly, sice it was me who started tht thread I'm chiming in : well...my final word on this is that, yes using a dual core CPU with pre-7 versions of PT is going to have some benefit (I almost made it to the end of a pretty dense rock mix with just one core), but since you will most likely be forced to disable one of the cores (either in Windows or just have PT run on one) you may as well use a single core CPU and call it a day; the real benefit of the dual core is seen only with PT7, and belive me...it's a huge benefit, it's way more than double the power of a same speed single CPU...If you plan to upgrade your hardware to a PT7 compatible one then go dual core, otherwise save your money and get the fastest single core CPU that you can.
Hope this helps L.G. |
